Separated Together #5

The disciples heard many tough and challenging words from their Master, Jesus. He wanted them to be heart-strong and faith-filled. He also wants the same for you and me.

Scripture for today

“Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:31-33

Jesus shared these word as He knew He was about to suffer on the cross and leave His disciples alone. He prepared them, in advance, for the inevitable separation they would feel.

Throughout history disciples have endured persecution of all sorts. But God has often used these persecution to spread His Followers and His message to the four corners of the globe.

“A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home.”

While these words directly refer to His disciples abandoning Him during this time, are there any more poignant words for us today?

During this pandemic, we have been encouraged, if not mandated, toward isolation and 'social distancing.'

Yet, hear the words of our Savior; for it is in His’ words we ultimately find hope.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.”

YES! That is what we want and hope and pray for during this time.

“In this world you will have trouble.”

Um, come again Jesus?! Wait, aren't I supposed to have peace, not trouble. Why can’t I just grab a double-portion of 'peace' and pass on that 'trouble' thing?

“But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”

Jesus wants his disciples to be heart-strong, Courageous, and full of faith in Him.

He reminded His group of 12 that He has, in fact, overcome the world.

Put your faith in Him who overcame trouble and find courage to walk in faith today.

Ultimately, Jesus wanted His first disciples, as well as his current disciples, to look to Him because He already overcame the world, including any virus we might face.

Prayer for today

Jesus, we are scattered and separated today.

Maybe even feeling a bit lonely.

The world seems like a disaster and the news constantly reminds us of more trouble.

Grant us courage today.

Grant us the ability to take heart, be gracious to those who fear, and trust in you when all seems lost. Because You have overcome the world and all its troubles.

Fill us with your Spirit that we may be a light to those in our sphere of influence. In Jesus name, Amen
